A MUSIC PAPER #2 a.m - hertfordshire - uk 24 pages - quarter size (landscape) ![]()
i/we tabled next to a at alternative press fair in august 09 and i picked up this little comic for the distro from him. it's about being a fan of (indie) music, in an obsessive way. i don't know if a is like the main character, "alternative" sam (i'd like to think it is) but it feels like a slightly self-depricating or what in finnish, we call self-irony (but i don't know the english term, if it isn't the same) look at the ways of us fans of alternative music are a bit elitist and obsessive compulsive about the stuff we like, and how it should be liked. i personally found nuggets of truth in there. weight: 1.5 fangs £2.00 ONLY ONE COPY LEFT!

![]() BACK IN STOCK! alex wreck - portland, or - USA 42 pages - half size ![]()
i don't think i can describe this zine better than alex herself: "i haven't made an issue brainscan in four years and i hope that this zine helps to explain why. brainscan 21 explores my recognition of being in an emotionally abusive relationship, the attempts on both parts to right wrongs, the failure to do so, and gathering the strength to take the next step. what if your private life in your relationship is vastly different than what other people see? when do you know you are in an emotionally abusive relationship? how to you gain the strength to get out of it? what do you do when you know you can't handle the burden alone? what do you do when you feel so alone and terrified of the consequences of leaving, when if it means losing friends, a home, a job and a way life that you love? these are just some of the ideas explored in this zine through a three year personal narrative that also challenges you to examine your relationships with power, to identify how you express the power you have, and also how you relate to the power that of others possess. but most of all this, zine is about revelation, rebirth, and growth." weight: 3 fangs £2.50

amber and maranda are twins, and i think this is their second split zine they've done together. it's mostly about family & finding out they've got an older half-sister somewhere that their estranged father had before he met their mother. amber also writes about despising the winter and running away to montreal for an unexpected new love affair, and leaving her dear sister behind. maranda writes also about missing her sister & their hijinx, memories from their childhood, ghosts & dreams. weight: 1.5 fangs £2.00

amber calls #19 her "coming out" issue, i guess because she hadn't really openly written about being queer before. she hasn't exactly hidden it, but she hasn't really talked about it either. she writes about her relation shipp with her ex-boyfriend who wasn't exactly supportive of her queerness, kissing girls at aprties and wishing boys weren't there watching and thinking it's some kind of a show for them, and feeling suffocated by the fact she's perceived as straight by default when she's not, just because she's in a relationship with a boy. she also writes about sexual assault in the beginning of the zine which some may find triggering so be in a safe space when you read it! weight: 1.5 fangs £1.50 ONLY ONE COPY LEFT!
![]() BACK IN STOCK! amber - montreal, quebec - canada 38 pages - quarter size-ish ![]()
culture slut #20 is a bit of a love letter to montreal, amber's new home. she writes about moving there for love, getting used to a new, much bigger city than she's used to and a new language, going back to learn french almost a decade after dropping out of high school, trying to make new friends and attencing pervers/cité (the more radical queer section of the more mainstream and corportae quebec gay pride, divers/cité) she also writes about her 1st period, her diva cup, a horrid cunt exam and kitties! (i like kitties) amber is one of my favourite zinesters, and since i actually sold all of the first lot of these less than a week after they first arrived before i even got a chance to think about descriptions, i don't think i'm the only one. weight: 2 fangs £1.50

edith is a collection of fiction by maranda elizabeth who also writes the excellent perzine telegram ma'am. she got some of her friends to give her 10 words as writing prompts and wrote short stories based on each set of 10 words. she had been trying to gather up the courage to publish some of her fiction for a while and i'm so glad she finally did! the zine is subtitled "these are tales of survival" which is very fitting. while the protagonist ladies may seem melancholy, there's still an underlying sense of hope for a brighter tomorrow. there's all together five stories in this issue. weight: 1.5 fangs £2.00

this issue of fanzine ynfytyn (which is named after a song by the welsh experimental rock band datblygu, and roughly translates to 'fanzine idiot'..) is mainly about the many eccentricies of the rather peculiar english teacher emma has in senior school. there are also photographs of brighton pier in an autumn sunset, and exquisite corpse and stories of emperors based on a very strange dream she once had. weight: 1.5 fangs £0.50

in issue nine emma writes about the time she didn't dance with kathleen hanna, gambling with pennies (after all, brighton pier is full of 2p machines! they are magnificient) reviews her progress on her childhood ambitions which were quite largely influenced by english kids tv shows from the early nineties, wonders what amoebas have to worry about, and lists things she always looks for in charity shops including things she collects and would like a full set one day. weight: 1.5 fangs £0.50 TEMPORARILY SOLD OUT!

![]() compzine - edited by kate - london, uk 18 pages - half size ![]()
this comp zine is "about children's books seen through older eyes" as the cover states. kate got a bunch of zinesters to reflect on their favourite books as kids and what they think re-reading them as adults. this issue includes an interview with diana wynne jones (chrestomanci series, howl's moving castle and many more!) and writings about books including anne of the green gables, outside over there by maurice sendak, alex in winter by tessa dunde, pippi longstocking by astrid lindgren, little house in the big woods by laura ingalls wilder, and more! i think it's an excellent & interesting read, i've been mainly reading books from my childhood lately myself (and listening to songs too, funnily enough one of my favourite children's songs just came up on shuffle. spooky.) perhaps that's got something to do with it. you don't only learn about the books but also the readers themselves. the layout is very simple, computer printed text with occasional illustrations with book covers etc, oh and comic of sorts by isy morgenmuffel. kate's working on issue 2 at the moment, incase you're interested. weight: 2 fangs £1.00

description by amber (culture slut & fight boredom zines) because i felt weird describing my own zine.. tukru of your pretty face is going straight to hell brings us her latest art zine, and maybe i'm a little biased because there's a drawing of me in it, but i think the whole thing is pretty damn awesome. very image heavy, including zombie drawings and clippings of vintage romance comics, all cut and paste in her signature style. she writes a little bit about starting vampire sushi distro and her dreams of girls gangs. (also harry potter and lady gaga, but i try to stay away from those two, haha). weight: 1.5 fangs £1.00

this issue of high on burning photographs is mainly about death, grief and redemption. ocean writes about the loss of a good roommate & amazing living situation and her history of more or less bad & unstable ones that didn't feel like home like this one did. she also remembers her friend axi who died of lung cancer (and institutionalised sexism) and visiting her grave. she also tells us about the healing qualities of the radio and the difference between pittsburg and philadelphia. weight: 1.5 fangs £1.00 TEMPORARILY SOLD OUT
![]() ocean - pittsburgh, pa - usa 22 pages - half size ![]()
in this issue, ocean writes about giving up alcohol, mail and working in the mailroom of a huge investment bank when she first moved to pittsburgh, choosing to be single and being happy about it as well as the first time she "realised the world is fucked" and learning to unlearn self hatred. i love ocean's zines. her writing is very sincere and honest, it really captures the moment. weight: 2 fangs £1.00 TEMPORARILY SOLD OUT

ciara writes about a 'radical relationships' workshop she attended, consent, her experiences organising boston skillshare and a critique of youth liberation, as well as about her experience having an abortion, from finding out to the examination and procedure to the anti-choice protestors outside the clinic. ciara's writing is wonderfully matter of fact, it's very honest and frank. no unnecessary frills. i thoroughly recommend this zine to everyone. the layout is simple, cut & paste typewritten text with some clip art and small drawing scattered on the pages. i especially like how the zine begins and ends with ciara's correspendence with the legendary seamonster, kraken. weight: 2 fangs
