TELEGRAM MA'AM #18 / YOUR PRETTY FACE IS GOING STRAIGHT TO HELL #9
maranda - lindsay, ontario - canada / tukru - chatham, kent - uk
This is the much-anticipated split zine from two of my favourite people: overseas pen pal Tukru and my twin Maranda. Although the original intention of the zine was to discuss loneliness and long-distance friendships, the stories strayed a little but are all the better for it. Maranda was inspired to write when people kept asking them how they managed to ride such a ridiculously colourful streamer-clad bicycle and dress up in strange outfits when they are often attacked by loneliness and anxiety. their half is all about their bicycle Jolene and the things they have learned through riding their small town's streets and learning how to repair the bike. they include tales of graffiti nights, the local lilac festival and the time they were hit by a car while riding their bike. they read excerpts from this during the zine reading at TZL a few weeks back and I thought it was quite moving. Tukru uses her half to write about visits from long-distance friends, her new Blythe doll, Harry Potter fangirldom, agreeing to take medication to deal with depression and a disastrous week with her brother. All cut and paste with typewritten and handwritten text, this issue is a totally epic SEVENTY pages. weight: 3 fangs £2.50 TEMPORARILY SOLD OUT!

VAMPIRE SUSHI #1
compilation art zine - edited by vampire sushi distro.
Argh, yes! I love this zine. This was put out as something of a Halloween special by Vampire Sushi Distro (operated out of small-town-UK by zinester couple Tukru and Carl). It's got a horror theme and is pretty much the most unpretentious art zine ever made. Quarter-size and printed entirely on red paper, it features illustrations by Cherry Truant, frl.zucker, Emma Falconer and others, plus short fiction by Clementine Cannibal and a Vampire Sushi mixtape tracklist featuring all of our favourite monster bands - The Cramps, Jack Off Jill, L7, The Knife, The Horrors and a whole lot more. Think vampires, zombies and even a were-pigeon. weight: 1.5 fangs £0.50

YOUR PRETTY FACE IS GOING STRAIGHT TO HELL #2
tukru - chatham, kent - uk
tukru seems to be finding her style a little more with this issue. partially handwritten (wonderfully!) and partially written on a vintage typewriter, she writes about crushy feelings and shyness and the difficult job hunt and sometimes missing her old life in finland, but accepting the fact that england is her new home. i read her cutsie stories about meeting her boyfriend with a big dumb grin on my face because it was just super sweet. weight: 3 fangs £2.00

YOUR PRETTY FACE IS GOING STRAIGHT TO HELL #6
tukru - chatham, kent - uk
i really, really love this issue of your pretty face. this issue was written as tukru's boyfriend was moving into her apartment, which means lots of worries about monies, but also ikea shopping sprees and being in love! i can relate most to the parts about living far away from all of her friends (perhaps because i'm one of her faraway friends!), and wishing she could just drop in for a cup of tea. you know, without having to book a flight first. zines and the internet have enabled us to meet people we never would have known otherwise, to connect with people we truly get along with. but it means that they are often hours, or even oceans away, leaving us feeling isolated. life is hard when you can't have your best friends by your side. as always, this zine has an amazing cut and paste layout with a combination of handwritten and typewritten text, and hand-coloured covers. truly a work of art! it's also got a tempting recipe for veggie-stuffed baked potatoes that i finally tried my hand at for dinner last week. yum yum! weight: 2.5 fangs £2.00

This is the much-anticipated split zine from two of my favourite people: overseas pen pal Tukru and my sister Maranda. Although the original intention of the zine was to discuss loneliness and long-distance friendships, the stories strayed a little but are all the better for it. YOUR PRETTY FACE IS GOING STRAIGHT TO HELL #10
tukru - chatham, kent - uk
Well look at that, Tukru's zine series has reached the double digits! In this quarter-size perzine, she writes about her adventures at various zinefests, djing at a girl-friendly club night, cat dreams and her thoughts on the buzz around riot grrrl these days. Plus she includes tons of mouth-watering recipes. Aubergine cheeseburgers? Homemade ketchup? Yes, please. I need to move this girl's zine to the cookbook shelf in my kitchen. weight: 2.5 fangs £2.00 TEMPORARILY SOLD OUT!

YOUR PRETTY FACE IS GOING STRAIGHT TO HELL #13
tukru - chatham, kent - uk
Tukru describes #13 as a tough issue to write, seeing as it is about difficult, serious topics - family, loss, death. The zine has a melancholy feel (for good reason, and it is anything but self-indulgent. It made me realize how much time I waste feeling upset over inconsequential things whilst dark surprises can lurk around the corner for any of us) and I would urge anyone reading it to make sure they are in a private, comfy, space when they do as reading it on the bus may result in crying in public (nothing wrong with that per se, but an activity I myself prefer to avoid) and/or missing your stop. Tukru's writing has hit a whole new level in this issue and I was completely blown away by the eloquence in which she explored difficult and emotional topics. Issue #13 initially addresses the topic of Tukru's boyfriend's dad's death - the initial shock of it, the ripples it sent through the family, her own reaction, the unfairness of death and her memories of the man who has been lost. He loved Queen, and the pages of the zine are decorated with photos of the band. Following this Tukru directs her thoughts towards her own family and the physical and metaphorical distances between them. In reading this section I felt I got to know Tukru's history and background, and the lady herself, deeper than before. weight: 2 fangs £2.00 TEMPORARILY SOLD OUT!

YOUR PRETTY FACE IS GOING STRAIGHT TO HELL #12
tukru - chatham, kent - uk
#12 is another excellent issue, this time with the focus on Tukru's roller derby injury (wrist broken in 3 places) and the plethora of hospital visits, day to day annoyances, pains and inconveniences brought to it. Her boss is still being difficult, and the silver lining of Tukru's fracture may be that it gave her some time off work - she reveals that she is tempted to up sticks and start a new life, but feels tied down by her job and flat; needing stability in her life and not being "a cool traveler punk kid" (I could definitely relate to this). Tukru also writes about roller derby and why she'll be going back despite her injury, and shares with us her Buffy obsession. As usual with YPFIGSTH the zine is beautifully presented, with a variety of layouts and images including photos from Tukru's life and Buffy screencaps with Finnish subtitles. weight: 2 fangs £2.00

HERE. IN MY HEAD #7 / YOUR PRETTY FACE IS GOING STRAIGHT TO HELL #14
catherine - nottingham / wales - uk / tukru - chatham - uk
A split zine! Must be the season for it. I love the way, intentionally or not, split zines often work around a specific theme. In this case, it's about getting bigger and better. Tukru says that 2010 was an absolutely awful year, and has resolved to make 2011 count. She writes about never feeling completely at home in Medway and what she's doing to remedy that - starting a queer-and-girl-friendly club night called Typical Grrls, for one, and returning to roller derby after an injury (written about in a previous issue). Illustrations and cut-and-paste wonder abound. In the seventh issue of Catherine Elms' Here. In My Head., subtitled Change & Improvement, we learn about her current attempts to call herself out on snap judgments and low self-esteem in a realistic manner. She writes about the dueling matters of beauty and feminism, and includes a goodbye letter to her shyness and more. Worth a read for you perzine fans. weight: 3 fangs £2.00 TEMPORARILY SOLD OUT!

YOUR PRETTY FACE IS GOING STRAIGHT TO HELL #15
tukru - chatham, kent - uk
I've never read an issue of this zine that I didn't like, and #15 is a particularly good one! In it Tukru discusses her experience of getting a birth control implant (far more positive than my own experience of one was, I have to say) and her decision to drop out of roller derby. I must admit I was particularly nosily interested in the latter, as I was initially quite surprised to hear via Twitter that Tukru had quit, when it seemed to be an ever-increasing part of her life. But as is explained in the zine, roller derby had passed from fun hobby to strenuous, stressful chore, and when that happens, its time to get out. Later in the zine Tukru discusses her (positive) experience of attending Slutwalk London and her thoughts on rape culture. She also finds room in the zine to talk about her decision to remain taking anti-depressants for the time being, and to ponder her upcoming 29th birthday. All in all it's a very enjoyable zine with all the best aspects of any issue of Your Pretty Face Is Going Straight To Hell - feminist thoughts, tons of text to read, a chatty, friendly writing style and countless original layouts. weight: 2.5 fangs £2.00
